So the Biometrics Institute released its 2026 industry survey, and we non-Institute members can download an executive summary of the report.
So I did.
(I talked about a previous survey here.)
I will take the liberty of reproducing one small portion of the executive summary:
“While face at 45% continues to be the biometric expected to lead growth over the next few years, combining to or more different biometric modalities has nearly doubled from 11% last year to 21% this year. Furthermore, when asked which modality is expected to increase significantly over the next few years, multimodal leads the wider field at 40%, up from 29% last year, as combinations become the practical answer to evolving threats.”
My question: why isn’t everyone using multimodal (and, for that matter, multifactor) TODAY?
The answer is that it’s so danged easy (i.e. frictionless) just to take a selfie and be done with it.
But is the use of a single modality wise? Perhaps in non-critical applications, but the critical ones had better rely on more than one modality or factor for authentication, and definitely for identity verification.
