No New News on Carmen Messano and the New Jersey Frye Hearing…But I Found Some Old News

Trying to update the story. As you may recall, retired New Jersey Judge Carmen Messano was scheduled to start his temporary appointment this month. The appointment concerns an evidentiary hearing (a Frye hearing) on the admissibility of fingerprint evidence in state courts.

It is part of the court case State v. French G. Lee. Lee was originally convicted of burglary in based upon latent fingerprint evidence, but the admissibility of the evidence was challenged in a higher court.

And here we are.

I’ve been tracking this case since Mike Bowers mentioned it in mid July. And to be honest, there’s been no new public news since then.

I checked Google News for any new stories on Judge Messano this month and couldn’t find any.

So, like a baseball executive on a losing team searching for any scrap that could help, I looked through the old stories. And found this.

“Calvin Settle, of Jersey City, was arrested Tuesday evening and charged in Hudson County Court with the death of the Brooklyn tot, Natalia Rivera, said District Attorney Carmen Messano.”

The date of the story? February 9, 1994.

Heck, that was before I started consulting at Printrak in October 1994.

Messano has more experience than I do.

And experience is good.
