So, What Is Liveness Detection?

At its core, liveness detection is a security measure designed to verify that the person attempting to use a biometric system is a real, live human being—and not a spoof. In the past, biometric systems like facial recognition were pretty easy to fool. A fraudster could simply hold up a photo of the authorized user to the camera, and boom, they’re in. This is called a spoofing attack, and it’s a big problem. Liveness detection was created to solve this problem.

Liveness detection technology analyzes various physiological and behavioral cues to determine if the user is a living person. It’s looking for signs of life that a photograph, video, or 3D mask can’t replicate.
